HOW TO INSTALL
Of course, you could
entirely replace your icons with this collection. However, that would
mean that you would probably have to assign all icons to all of your appointments
and todo's all over again. This would probably not make you the happiest
person on earth ;-)
So, instead of doing that, you can either
simply copy-and-paste them from one memo to the other or redraw them
with the distributed .gif files as an example. How can this be done:
1
. Save
the entire textfile containing the icon theme you have chosen in your
Palm Desktop's memopad section or as a textfile on your computer.
2
. Open
the .GIF file provided in the .zip or .sit file you downloaded
in, for example, Netscape, IE or your favourite image viewer to view the
icons and decide on which ones you would like to use.
3
To actually
put the new icons in your palm you can do either one of the following:
3A
Install
DBICED on your Palm or Visor. DBICED is a freeware Icon Editor from Inertron
Software for Datebk3/4 and works like magic! Get it at Palmgear. Use DBICED
to re-create the icons on your Palm device, using the .GIF file as an example.
3B.
Copy-and-paste the lines containing the icons you want from the textfile containing the theme you have chosen into the DATEBK3 memo on your Palm device or Palm Desktop, replacing
the lines containing the icons you want replaced. Obviously the latter
method is the best... - BUT -
IMPORTANT
NOTE
Please make sure you do NOT mess up the
alphabetical order of the icons!! In other words: please make sure that
the order is still from -

I
CANNOT INSTALL THE ICONS WITH THE PALM INSTALL TOOL
You will notice
there is no .prc file included in the .zip or .sit file. The reason
for this is that you are not dealing with a regular application here.
We have merely created
icons that can be used within the Datebk3 and Datebk4 applications. The
Install tool should not be used at all, nor is a .prc file available
for this installation! The reason for this is that the icons that the
Datebk3/4 application shows are generated from a text-based memo in your
Palmīs memopad application. In other words: instead of installing an application
that holds the icons, you are in fact installing a new memo that holds
the (hexadecimal) code for the icons.
If you already have a memo in your Palm device called DATEBK3, please
make sure you have a backup of this file before changing anything or
pasting any new icons into it.
WE STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU CREATE A COPY OF THE EXISTING
DATEBK3 MEMO ON YOUR HANDHELD AND RENAME IT TO 'Original Datebk3/4 icons'.
In order to perform the installation of individual icons into
your existing DATEBK3 icon memo, please follow these steps:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please
refer to the answer to Question
#5 for instructions on the structure of the DATEBK3 memo/iconfile
and how to remain its integrity! Make sure there are no leading and trailing
spaces and keep in mind that the order of the icons in the file is essential! After the hotsync operation, a memo will appear in your
Palm´s memo application with 'Datebk3' as its first line (not
including the quotation marks). Datebk3/4 will actually find this memo
and read its contents, which it will then translate into the individual
icons.

I
AM USING DATEBK4 BUT CAN ONLY FIND A MEMO CALLED DATEBK3
Both Datebk3 and
Datebk4 make use of the same memo called 'DATEBK3'.
I
HAVE FOLLOWED ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BUT THE ICONS STILL DO NOT
SHOW IN DATEBK3/DATEBK4
1.
Go into Datebk3 or Datebk4.
Additional
instructions for Datebk4: -

I
PASTED 1 LINE FROM YOUR ICONPACK INTO THE DATEBK3 MEMO AND AM GETTING
AN ERROR MESSAGE
The problem is
that Datebk3 or Datebk4 needs a memo with first line 'DATEBK3' that
has a total of 53 lines. In other words: it needs to find 52
icons and not just one. Since you pasted just one icon, it will
dismiss the DATEBK3 memo as corrupt.
So, just fill
the DATEBK3 memo up with icons, or create some yourself. You donīt have
to USE these other icons, just make sure that they are there (you could
f.e. define them as EXAMPLE:

I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE COLOR ICONS. WHERE CAN I FIND THOSE? Currently, Datebk3 and Datebk4 do not support color icons. If the developer decides to change this in a future release, twokidsinagarage will try and release a new distribution for color icons. This, however, may not be a free upgrade. I ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM WITH THE ICONS THAT IS NOT COVERED IN THE FAQ. HOW DO I REPORT THIS PROBLEM? If you encounter
any problems that are not dealt with in this FAQ,
please send a detailed report to info@twokidsinagarage.com.
DO NOT send any mail to PimlicoSoftware as that company has nothing
to do whatsoever with these icons. In the body of your email, please send as many relevant details
as possible, i.e.:
WOW, I DIDN'T KNOW I COULD ACTUALLY CREATE ICONS FOR DATEBK3/4 MYSELF. CAN YOU TELL ME HOW TO DO THAT?
Well, we actually think you should just get them from TWOKIDSINAGARAGE. I mean... why go through all the trouble, the restless nights, the tiring creative process, the satisfaction, when you can just come and buy them here... ?
TWOKIDSINAGARAGE use DBICED (from Inertron Software, freeware) to create all of our icons. Bear in mind that you will have to have a properly working DATEBK3 iconfile in order for DBICED to work! If you go to PalmGearHQ and enter several searches, i.e. for 'icon editor' and for 'datebk3 icon', more editors will be found. These are: THIS IS ALL GREAT BUT.. WHAT THE HECK IS THIS DATEBK3 OR DATEBK4 ANYWAY? From the Pimlico Software website: "DateBk4 is the most advanced replacement yet for the Datebook, ToDo and Memo applications with an addressbook viewer. DateBk4 offers split-screen display of all four databases, linking and logging, ten views of appointments, integrated display of ToDo's with appointments, beaming of events and categories, Custom alarms, colors, fonts, repeats and advances on both appointments and ToDo's, custom views, advanced category managements in all four databases, appointments spanning midnight, anniversaries, floating events, appointments to the minute, irregular schedules and more than 50 other distinct improvements in a program that is so close in operation to the built-in Datebook and ToDo applications that most users can start using it immediately." |
