You can use the installation application, "Ascend Installer.prc" to install Ascend onto your handheld.
The installer will install the following files:
Ascend.prc: Required, the Ascend Program.
Ascend.pdb: Optional, this is a pre-populated database that includes the popular Colorado Fourteeners mountains.
Ascend is a both a database of mountains/peaks and a personal journal of your treks to the top of them. There are four types of information that you enter:
Additional features of the program include sorting by Name, Altitude, and Summited Status. There is also a "Journal Writer" that allows "Full Screen" editing of the journal. Plus, you can create eBooks from any entry to publish or impress your friends.
Like the standard Memo Pad application, when you start Ascend you will be presented with a list of mountains/peaks. Tap the new button to create a new entry. Tap an existing entry in the display, and you will edit that entry. In addition, you can sort the listing by tapping on the [Ascend Menu] and choosing the sort. There is a [Goto Menu] that will quickly move you to the top or bottom of the list. The repeater keys and the up/down hard-keys also move you up and down.
There are only two preferences:
Additionally, your date on the entry will always be the "long" form of your Palm's System Date Format Preference. This means, if you have the Palm display dates as D-M-Y then the long form would be "Dy D Mon Year" or for example, "Sun 25 Feb 2001."
If you want to give another Palm user a copy of one of your great climbs, you can convert your Ascend entry to an eBook and beam it to the other Palm. The other Palm only needs a free eBook or Doc reader to read it.
An eBook is a document that is in the de facto "DOC" format. This means they can be read by any eBook or "Doc" reader. I highly recommend the Palm distributed eBook reader "PalmReader" which is freely downloaded from the Palm web site. CSpotRun is another free eBook reader. The eBook / Doc format is preferred because it can contain large abouts of text and can easily be edited on the Windows or Mac desktops.
To create an eBook, go to the entry you want to export and click on the menu "Create an eBook." This will display a dialog where you give it the following three pieces of information:
Click the OK button and it will create the eBook. You can then hotsync it, beam it, or read it with a reader.
Ascend fully supports the Palm Find button. Both the mountain/peak name and journal entries are searched.
Your Ascend database is called AscendDB and after HotSync'ing is stored in your Palm\<username>\Backup folder. If you have to do a "hard" reset your Palm, then the first time you HotSync, your database will be re-installed.
This program is shareware. It's fully functional, however there are a couple of "nag" screens that display until you register. The registered version removes these "nag" screens and allow you to get free updates. Registration is US$10.00. The easiest way to register this software is to buy it online at www.PalmGear.com. As soon as I've received notification from PalmGear, I'll send you the registration code.
You may send me mail at anytime with comments or suggestions.
