Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are the big crosshairs for in the map window?
  2. The horizontal line is the equator, the vertical line is the prime meridian (longitude = 0). You can choose whether to display these lines under "Interface Options".

  3. Why can't the map be zoomed in further?
  4. Each doubling of scale means quadrupling the volume of data. I start hitting all sorts of hardware and OS limitations if I were to go to 8x. I'm not totally ruling this out for some upgrade eventually, maybe on a future version of the OS or >= PalmOS 5.2 only, but it would run slower and lead to a far larger executable.

  5. When I do a Palm find, Planet opens but it isn't showing the city I selected. Why?
  6. Global finds from outside Planet are disabled in the evaluation version. If you do the Palm find while Planet is already running it will work, and when you register the software it will work from any application.

  7. Would it be possible to add country borders to the main screen?
  8. Sorry but no. Firstly there is a storage space issue, storing this additional information for all the maps would double the size of the executable and would slow down the processing. Secondly I don't want all the debates about "you've got the the border to my country two pixels to the left, and now it looks like I live in France" or have to update the software every time a border somewhere changes.

  9. Why can't I add a new city by tapping on the map?
  10. Placing a city accurately using the map would require at least 16x zoom, and that is not currently possible (see the earlier question above).

If you want to add a new city either go look up the actual latitude and longitude, or pick a city nearby and tweak the coordinates slightly (the "Add City" dialog always starts with the lat/long of the currently selected city) , or have a look on www.jsankey.com to see if someone else has submitted a database containing the cities you need.
