Button Mapping
Button Mapping is the one of its kind utility that allows associating each hardware button with two tasks (such as launching of applications and control panel applets, stylus tap emulation, and macros). The unique feature of this plug-in is the ability to create application-specific settings.

.

Button Mapping Settings window consists of Configuration list, Hardware Buttons table, and Action list.

Configuration list displays options available for global and application dependent assignments:
  • <Default> is a global setting which is active in case no application dependent assignments are made
  • <Today> and other installed programs showed in the list are available for application dependent assignments.
Hardware Buttons table displays buttons and assignments created for them in the Configuration list. ButtonMapper provides two types of button workflow: single press and press-n-hold. Both types are listed in the table as separate rows for each hardware button.

Action list displays actions available for the binding. ButtonMapper provides 4 types of bindings:
  • system actions (Display On/Off, Input Panel, Scrolling, Start Menu, switch to Today screen);
  • system applets (Backlight Setting, Memory Setting, Power Setting);
  • applications (installed programs);
  • stylus tap emulation (including macros).
Notes:
  1. In case a custom button assignment was created for an application and such application is running, the buttons settings for the current application become active - and the default settings become inactive. Thus, it is possible to create unlimited number of assignments for every button. To be specific, we'll say that if you have N programs, you can create N*2 actions for every button.
    For example, one action will be active when one program, for which the assignment was created, is running, other will be active when other program is running, and also the other one (default) will be active in case no programs for which the actions were assigned are running.
  2. Initially Button Mapping displays assignments made in Buttons applet of System Settings.
  3. When Button Mapping is enabled, the system Buttons tool (Start -> Settings -> Personal tab) is replaced with Button Mapping settings window.
  4. You have to soft reset your device to activate/deactivate Button Mapping.
Back
To create a binding:
  1. select an application from Configuration list to make assignments for.
  2. select a button from the Hardware Buttons table (tap to activate it);
  3. select an action from the Action list;
  4. Press OK
Tap Reset to delete assignments for currently selected application.

With Export settings and Import settings buttons you can import/export assignments for all or selected programs.

To create Stylus Tap Emulation
With Button Mapping it is possible to emulate stylus taps for selected applications. You can record a touch screen tap and perform it later with a button press. Tap emulation can be assigned in the application dependent mode.
Note: This function can be especially useful to call program menus or press on-screen buttons when a certain application is active.

To assign stylus tap emulation:
  1. select an application from Configuration list
  2. select a button from Hardware Buttons table (tap to activate it);
  3. select <Stylus Tap Emulation> from Action list;
  4. read on-screen instructions appeared in dialog box and press [ok];
  5. Button Mapping will launch the application chosen from Configuration list and will display its main window with a [Start] button in the flying box in center;
  6. press [Start] in the flying box and tap at the desired coordinate on the screen;
  7. Button Mapping will record your tap and will ask you to enter a name for this action. This name will appear as Assignment in Hardware Buttons table (one word is recommended).
Back
To create Macros for Stylus Tap Emulation
Button Mapping allows creating macros for stylus tap emulation. You can record a sequence of touch screen taps to perform it with a single button press. Macros can be assigned in the application dependent mode.
Note: This function can be especially useful to manage program menus when a certain application is active.
For example you can create a macro to activate/deactivate Bluetooth on your device with a single press of a button.

To assign macros for stylus tap emulation:
  1. select an application from Configuration list;
  2. select a button from Hardware Buttons table (tap to activate it);
  3. select <Macros> from Action list;
  4. read on-screen instructions appeared in dialog box and press [ok];
  5. Button Mapping will launch the application chosen from Configuration list and will display its main window with a [Start] button in a flying box in center;
  6. press [Start] in a flying box, ButtonMapper will display the list of available operations:

  7. select Stylus Tap Emulation and press [ok];
  8. tap at desired coordinate on the screen and press [Start] in the flying box to continue;
  9. select Stylus Tap Emulation to perform another tap or select Pause to set a pause;
  10. repeat steps 6-9 to record as many taps as you need;
  11. select Finish Macros to end sequence recording;
  12. enter name for the recorded macro.
Note: due to some system restrictions on-screen menus disappear after you press [Start]. Remember menu item coordinate and tap on it to record this action even when menu is not on the screen.
Note: you may need to insert a pause between calling a menu and further actions (the reason for this is that many programs respond not immediately). To do so, select Pause from the dropdown menu that appears after you press [Start]. The default value (500 ms) is optimal pause period for most applications.
