 DensCalc

A Sea Water Equation of State Calculator for the Palm OS

DensCalc is a sea water equation of state calculator for the Palm OS. It will compute any two of the following four parameters: temperature, conductivity, salinity, and density, from the other two parameters and it will do this for any depth in the ocean. The program also computes the speed of sound, specific heat, freezing point, adiabatic lapse rate, sigma-t, potential temperature, and potential density.

Just type in a value in any field (except the last field, which is output only) and hit the Calculate button. The on screen indentation (or arrows) indicate the independent variables that will be used in the calculation. Just click on any field to change the indpendent variables.

System Requirements:

DensCalc runs under Palm OS 2.0 or later. DensCalc needs MathLib.prc to be installed on the same Palm as DensCalc. MathLib is a widely used library of mathematical routines. DensCalc should work with any version of MathLib that is installed on your Palm.

Instructions:

To install DensCalc, copy the DensCalc.prc and MathLib.prc files onto your Palm.

Just type in a value in any field, but the last field, and hit the Calculate button. The independent variables that will be used in the calculation are indicated either by indentation to the left OR by on screen arrows. Just click on any field to change the independent variables.

The last field on the main display is output only. The quantity displayed in this field can be selected from a list of additional parameters found in the Options menu.

A help menu is available to provide some tips for using DensCalc.

Cut and paste work into and out of other applications.

Click on the down arrow, or press the page down button, to scroll to the following screen of additional parameters. Hit the up arrow key, or press the page up button, to return to the main display.

The user interface (sliding fields or fixed fields) can be selected from the Options:Preferences menu item.

Please send bug reports or questions about DensCalc to me at the address below.

Revision History:

Version 1.2 - released 22 Jan 2006: Updated code to latest Palm development system. Should better support latest Palm hardware.

Version 1.1 - released 13 Aug 2002: Modified input fields to accept more than just numeric characters. This allows floating point numbers and negative numbers to be entered. It also fixed a problem with paste, which in the previous version would not replace selected text. Web site updated on June 6, 2003 to replace defective Zip files.

Version 1.0 - released 2 Aug 2002: Based on JavaScript version at http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/denscalc.html
